A Year in the Life: Big Moves for One New Owner
Jim Bright bought an existing AlphaGraphics location in April 2012 in Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville. Since then, he’s doubled the center’s revenue, doubled the employee count, moved to a larger location, added sales capacity and invested heavily in equipment and systems that expand his capabilities.
You could say that Bright is “All In,” and his efforts are being recognized. AlphaGraphics’ Annual Conference happened to be held in Nashville this year, and Bright’s team was honored in four categories during the awards ceremony: hitting $100,000 in sales in the first month; the Rising Star Award for excellence as a new owner; the Network Ambassador Award for mentoring other owners; and for year-over-year growth of more than 10 percent.
“The sales success is very rewarding, and I have a great team that helps drive our growth. But I guess I’m most proud of the Network Ambassador Award, because I’ve spent a lot of time with new owners, helping pay it forward as others did for me,” Bright says. “I’ve hosted new franchisees as shadows here, and that collaboration is so energizing and valuable.”
Over the last year, Bright has added large-format production capability in-house, including latex printers that can create outdoor banners, signs, window graphics, exterior decals, vinyl clings, vehicle wraps and more. They’ve also added envelope and letterhead printing capability, all of which offers more comprehensive sales opportunities.
But the biggest leap for Bright’s team may be on the marketing services side. They recently completed a website for a client after designing the company’s logo, business cards, and brochures, while also handling email hosting, search engine optimization and online marketing. The project started with a simple request for trade show materials.
“We’ve been fortunate to be in the top 25 percent in growth in our first year, but it’s sustainable growth and profitability that I’m looking for long-term,” Bright says. “The expanded services and digital side give me an chance to manage hard costs while gaining a larger portion of a customer’s marketing business, and it represents a ton of potential.”
